Purpose

Our intention for change can have an impact on our success. A simplistic idea of what that change means to us or our reasons for choosing it can reduce our likelihood of making it impactful and long-lasting.

This activity consolidates our ‘why’ for making change. It helps bring in the truth, the reality, the uniqueness of our situation, and our deepest wishes. It also allows us to identify and remove barriers and places our own needs into the frame rather than what we think we ‘should’ do.

Step 1

Consider the change you hope to make and start adding thoughts to this table:

Step 2

Now you know your true motivation for change, the next step is to reflect on the positive impacts and how you will take action to make this change long-lasting.

You must also review the positive impacts of remaining in the status quo. Seeking advice may support you in being more informed about not making the change and help you build more evidence for making it.

This activity was inspired by motivational interviewing, a healthcare technique that supports patients in making lifestyle changes.

Understanding your deeper motivation is key to creating change that lasts. By exploring not just your goals but also your personal reasons, barriers, and the reality of your situation, you build a stronger foundation for action. This clarity helps you make decisions that reflect your true needs, increasing the likelihood of meaningful and sustainable progress.
