The Impact of Doing It All: How to Move from a Hustle Mindset to a Sustainable Mindset

Writer: Elizabeth SimpsonElizabeth Simpson

In today’s fast-paced world, we often feel pressure to be successful, work harder, do more, and be everything to everyone. The hustle mindset has become so deeply ingrained in our culture that it can feel like the only way to live. We push ourselves to meet the demands of work, family, friendships, fitness, and personal growth, all while striving to maintain an ideal image. Yet, this constant pressure to “do it all” can lead to burnout, overwhelm, and a disconnection from what truly matters.

Striving to do it all can drain our energy and leave us feeling like we’re never enough, no matter how much we achieve. So, how do we break free from this cycle? How can we shift from the hustle mentality to a more sustainable, fulfilling way of living? In this article, we’ll explore how to move from the pressure of doing it all to consciously choosing what truly matters, allowing you to create a life that supports a more balanced and sustainable approach.

Where Does This Dilemma Come From?

The pressure to hustle in all areas of life isn’t just personal—it’s deeply ingrained in our culture. Hustle culture glorifies busyness, equating success with constant effort. In this mindset, professional busyness becomes a justification for neglecting other areas of life. We pour our time and energy into work, not only to feel like we are progressing but also to be seen as successful.

Yet, the hustle mentality extends far beyond work. The same relentless drive is expected in parenting, friendships, hobbies, fitness, and personal well-being. Every aspect of life demands high performance, leaving little room for rest.

A Shift in How We Work

Historically, human survival depended on applying skills and intellect, with men and women contributing equally to hunting, foraging, and tool-making. Research shows no strict gender roles in these tasks, and modern hunter-gatherer societies still reflect this balance. However, capitalism and mass food production altered this dynamic. Work became something to sell—time exchanged for money.

The Industrial Revolution further cemented this shift, defining work as something separate from personal life. As industries grew, so did expectations around productivity, eventually creating the rigid work structures we see today.

The Role of Religion and Social Structures

Religious beliefs played a key role in shaping work ethics. Capitalism flourished in Protestant-majority regions, where doctrine promoted hard work and frugality. However, early religious teachings did not encourage wealth for luxury but rather for reinvestment into more work. Meanwhile, Christian doctrine often viewed wealth with suspicion.

The concept of ‘sloth’ also influenced attitudes toward rest. Though often interpreted as physical laziness, its Latin origins point to mental disengagement rather than a lack of physical effort. Over time, religious teachings reinforced the idea that constant labour was virtuous while idleness was shameful.

Religion also shaped societal structures that held women back. Laws like coverture stripped married women of legal rights, and restrictions in trades and professions limited their opportunities. Even as capitalism evolved, these barriers remained, dictating who had access to work and success.

The Twentieth Century: Work, Women, and the ‘Superwoman’ Ideal

By the twentieth century, selling time for money had become the norm, with individuals expected to be grateful for whatever time they were ‘permitted’ outside of work. The war effort demonstrated women’s intelligence and capabilities across industries, yet it wasn’t until the mid-1970s that legal recognition of equal pay emerged.

As more women entered the workforce, the term ‘career woman’ surfaced—marking those who prioritised work over family life as different. Instead of religious institutions dictating women’s roles, the media took over, introducing the ‘superwoman’ archetype. This figure was expected to juggle career success, family obligations, and social expectations, all while maintaining an effortlessly polished image.

The Modern Paradox: More Choices, Same Pressures

Fast forward to today, and women no longer question whether they can have it all—they struggle with the reality of what that actually means. The options are there, but they exist within structures designed for a different era. Women remain underpaid in labour-intensive fields like care and education, face barriers to leadership, and continue to shoulder the bulk of unpaid caregiving.

Despite equal pay legislation being nearly 50 years old, women still earned 13.8% less than men in 2024 for the same work, with the same experience and education. Ironically, women are now more educated than ever, earning a greater proportion of postgraduate qualifications.

So, in 2025, women face a paradox. The belief that we must follow a single career path is fading. The stigma around accumulating wealth has reversed. Even the idea that hard work is required for social acceptance is loosening. Yet, we are still working hard—over-educating, earning less, taking on caregiving responsibilities, and remaining underrepresented in leadership.

Hustle Culture: The Expanded Version

Hustle culture hasn’t disappeared; it has simply expanded. It’s no longer just about working hard for money—it’s about hustling to have it all in every area of life. The media reinforces this by glorifying an unrealistic version of success, pushing individuals—especially women—to do everything, achieve everything, have great physical and mental health, and look perfect while doing it.

This often leads to burnout, especially for women, not just from long hours but also from the mental load, second-shift responsibilities, and societal pressure to be everything to everyone.

So, let’s explore this:

  • What is the cost of trying to do it all?

  • How do you know if you are hustling?

  • Is this way of life right for you—or right for you right now?

  • What steps can you take to reduce a hustle mentality?

The Cost of Trying to Do It All

As responsibilities grow, obligations shift, and mis-wanting takes hold, the list of things to be done expands over time. The consequences of the Do-It-All Dilemma include:

  • Burnout Beyond Work – Burnout isn’t just a career issue. Emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion creep into all aspects of life when we push ourselves too hard.

  • Feeling ‘Never Enough’ – No matter how much we accomplish, there’s always something more to do. This creates a cycle of guilt and dissatisfaction.

  • Neglecting Personal Well-Being – When every area of life demands energy, self-care often falls to the bottom of the list.

  • Reduced Resources – Striving to fit in all the activities and buy everything we believe will support the lifestyle we think serves us comes at a cost. Not only do we deplete our financial resources, but we also drain our internal resources—time, energy, mental capacity, and emotional regulation.

Signs You Are Hustling

  • Constant anxiety about productivity and performance – This often leads to feeling like there’s always more to be done, no matter what you achieve.

  • Feeling as though you can’t take a day off or a break during your day – The pressure to keep going can make rest feel like an indulgence rather than a necessity.

  • Neglecting relationships and personal wellness – Missing time with family and friends or skipping self-care routines, all in the name of productivity, is a common sign.

  • Struggling to make time for reflection, relaxation, and enjoyment – When you’re always on the go, finding space for these moments can feel impossible.

  • Feeling disconnected from joy and purpose – Hustling non-stop often leads to a sense of emptiness, where joy and fulfilment feel distant.

Is This Way of Life Right For You or Right For You Right Now?

No one can answer this for you. In fact, you may have already made up your mind or justified it. However, take a moment to check in with where you are right now in terms of your hustle mindset. Do any of these statements resonate with you?

  1. I do not have a hustle mindset. I don’t allow any one area of my life to consume more energy or time than I am comfortable with, and therefore, I don’t experience any of the ‘signs you are hustling’ listed above.

  2. I am a hustler. I experience the above ‘signs you are hustling,’ and that works for me.

  3. I do have a hustler mindset. I experience some of the above ‘signs you are hustling,’ and I want to experience things differently.

  4. I recognise that having a hustle mindset is helpful to me at times, yet I can plan for and embrace slower periods that allow for a sense of overall balance. I don’t often experience the above ‘signs you are hustling,’ and I know how to support myself when I do.

Once you've identified where you stand and whether this is right for you right now, consider what a new, more positive experience could look like. Picture yourself a year from now—how are you intentionally thinking and behaving differently? How is this impacting how you feel?

Shifting from a Hustle Mindset to a Sustainable Mindset

Escaping the Do-It-All Dilemma doesn’t mean giving up ambition. It means redefining success on your own terms and consciously choosing where to invest your energy, while approaching your actions and decisions with self-compassion.

  1. Redefine Success on Your Own Terms - Ask yourself: What truly matters to me? Instead of seeking external validation, focus on what aligns with your values and priorities.

  2. Ditch the ‘Balance’ Myth and Embrace Seasons - Rather than striving for perfect balance across all areas of life, embrace the idea of seasons. Some periods will be career-focused, while others will prioritise family, health, or personal growth—and that’s perfectly fine.

  3. Set Boundaries and Learn to Say No - Not every opportunity or obligation deserves your energy. Set clear boundaries around work, social commitments, and even personal expectations to protect your time and well-being.

  4. Prioritise Rest and Recovery - Rest is not a luxury; it’s essential. Make space for activities that restore your energy—whether it’s sleep, leisure, or unstructured time to simply be with yourself.

  5. Let Go of Perfectionism - Done is better than perfect. Embracing imperfection opens the door to more joy and less pressure in every part of life. This may be a challenging shift, but the effort will be worth it.

  6. Practice Self-Compassion - Instead of measuring yourself by how much you achieve, practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a close friend, recognising that you are enough just as you are.

In a world that constantly tells us to hustle, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that success requires doing it all. But the truth is, constantly striving to meet everyone’s expectations and juggling endless responsibilities can take a heavy toll on our well-being. Shifting from a hustle mindset to a sustainable one is not about abandoning ambition—it’s about redefining success on your own terms, prioritising what truly matters, and creating space for rest and self-compassion. By embracing seasons of focus, setting boundaries, and letting go of perfectionism, we can begin to build a life that supports not just achievement, but also our happiness, health, and peace of mind. Remember, doing less can often lead to more: more energy, more fulfilment, and more joy in the moments that truly count.
